Windows 8 is Coming Soon!

With the impending release of Windows 8, Microsoft is set to radically change the way you interact with your PC. Ever since Windows 95, PC users have been accustomed to features such as the Start Menu and task bar but that’s all going to change with Windows 8.

The Metro UI
Windows 8 will ship with a new user interface which Microsoft is calling “Metro”. Rather than the usual start menu and desktop, users will be presented with a grid-like interface where programs and information such as social network updates and weather will appear in rectangular shapes. An interface similar to that found in Windows 7 will still be available in the background but it’s clear that Microsoft intends to move away from that antiquated style.
If you plan on upgrading to a Windows 8 PC this year we can help make the transition smooth by showing you the ins and outs of Microsoft’s new operating system.
De-spam Your Physical And Digital Inboxes

Spam, mass-mail, marketing…whatever you call it it’s an annoying fact of life and it can quickly overload both your digital and physical mail boxes. Clients often ask me “how can I reduce all this spam?”. There are several tactics one can take to handle spam but here I’ll go over two new services which may make the task much easier.
Recent spam laws enacted in the US have made the task of tackling spam a little bit easier since senders are now required to use language that identifies the messages as marketing material and also they’re required to include a link where you can unsubscribe from the mailings.
With any spam that you receive on a regular basis the easiest step you can take is to locate the unsubscribe link (usually at the very bottom of the message). Most mailing lists take only seconds to unsubscribe from. Recently a great little start-up has emerged that promises to make the job of unsubscribing from email spam even easier.
Unroll.me is a free service which scans your email account and identifies spam. Unroll.me then lets you opt-out of multiple mailing-lists right from the website interface. Currently this service only works with Gmail, Yahoo, and AOL accounts but I expect they will add support for other email providers soon.
“Unroll.me is the easiest way to manage your inbox. Unsubscribe from unwanted email subscriptions, discover new ones and organize them all in one place.”
Snail Mail
Physical spam can be equally annoying and it’s much worse for our environment. If you have an iPhone, Windows Phone, or Android smart phone there’s a new app that promises to help reduce your physical spam. PaperKarma uses your smartphone camera to identify the senders of unwanted mail. All you have to do is take a photo of the mail you no longer wish to receive and send the image to PaperKarma directly through the app. PaperKarma will analyze the image to determine who the sender is and will send an unsubscribe request to the company on your behalf.
“PaperKarma allows you to take photos of the junk mail you wish to stop. Snap a photo, and you’re done.
We automatically contact the Mailer and remove you from their distribution list. PaperKarma can stop most junk mail that is addressed directly to you.”
